Growing Up in Germany

I grew up in Stuttgart, Germany, where baking, fresh bread, and Kaffee und Kuchen are simply part of life. Bread was on the table every single day, and going to the local bakery was part of the culture. The smell of fresh Brötchen in the morning, warm pretzels in paper bags, and special cakes on Sunday after church was part of my childhood.

I learned how to bake in my Oma's kitchen. When she died, I received one of her baking books - which played a more important role than I ever expected.

Moving to America

When I was fourteen, my parents won a green card through the green card lottery (yes, that's actually a real thing). Soon after, we packed up our lives and moved to Philadelphia.

It was a huge culture shock. New language, new school, new everything. Like most teenagers, I just wanted to fit in. I tried to blend into American culture as much as possible, and somewhere along the way, I pushed my German roots to the side.

My Oma's Baking Book

For years, my Oma's baking book sat quietly on a shelf. But over time, I realized how much I missed German culture - especially the breads and sweets I grew up with. Everything here felt much sweeter, and I longed for the hearty breads and simple flavors of home.

After I got married and had children, it became important to me to keep my culture alive. I wanted my kids to grow up with the same traditions I had. So I pulled out my Oma's baking book and started baking. I wasn't perfect - I had plenty of failures - but I kept learning. And somewhere in the process, I fell in love with it.

The Bakery

As I became more confident in my baking, I kept thinking: what if I opened a bakery and shared authentic German treats - the kind I couldn't find anywhere here? But I wondered, would people even like this? It's so different.

In 2023, while still working as a counselor, I decided to just go for it. I told myself, worst case - I fail. At least I tried. At first, friends placed orders. I emailed every farmers market I could find and hosted my first pop-up, where I sold far more than I expected. Soon after, I was accepted into a farmers market that had just been voted number one in New Jersey. In August 2023, I showed up - and sold out in three hours. They told me to bring more. I did. I sold out again… and I've continued to sell out ever since.

More Than Just Baking

Hearing customers say, "I haven't had this since my Oma died," meant everything to me. Within a year, my small bakery became profitable, and I was asked to teach baking classes - which also sold out. I've been truly humbled by the support every step of the way.

Why the Name "Raven Cakes Bakery"?

Throughout my life, I have seen God's goodness in my life and in my family's life. When it came time to name my bakery, my husband suggested the name Raven Cakes, since ravens symbolize God's provision in the Bible. That idea immediately resonated with me because it reflects how God has faithfully provided for us.

The inspiration comes from the story of Elijah, where God sends ravens to bring food to His prophet. In the same way, I have seen this little bakery become a place of provision in our own lives. God has blessed me with a successful and profitable business that allows me to stay home with our girls while my husband serves as a pastor. This bakery has truly been a gift of provision, and I know that any success I have ultimately comes from Him.

Because of that, it has always been important to me to use what God has given us to bless others. Each month, a portion of the bakery's income goes toward organizations that make a difference, and we also look for ways to help those in need. Luke 12:24

How did you come up with your Name?

Raven Cakes was inspired by the biblical story of Elijah, where God sends ravens to provide food for His prophet. This bakery is a reminder of God's faithful provision in our family's life and a way to use those blessings to help others.

My Pretzels are hands down the number one thing people come for.

I'm New to Baking, where should I start?

Start with easy recipes like my bread rolls, or blueberry streusel cake. Also don't let mistakes keep you from learning. I had my fair share of baking fails.

What is your favorite place in Germany?

Hands down: Bavaria. It is the most beautiful place, and one of my favorite days in Germany was our day trip to the Zugspitze.

What is your Favorite German Dish?

Spatzle, with Rouladen and German Red Cabbage.
